Interview: Photographer Joey Cross (Netherlands)

Can you tell us a little about you?

Hi, my name is Joey Cross and I'm a freelance cameraman and video editor from The Netherlands. I always had a huge passion to express myself in a creative way. As a child I was always busy in my own imagination and I'm really proud that I never stopped doing that.

How and when did you get into photography? I bought my first DSLR camera (Canon 600D) in 2014. My first intention was to use my camera to film at music festivals. After a while I started to make portrait pictures and people around me responded in a very positive way. From that moment I wanted to learn more about photography and started to be more serious about it. Since 2 years I slowly started to be satisfied with my work and becoming proud of it. What does photography mean to you? Photography is a way to express and connect with other people. When you work with a model you have to trust each other to get the best results. I always enjoy getting to know new people and it makes it a lot more fun.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I have a dreamy picture style. My pictures doesn't have to look completely realistic and I love to give it a mysterious feeling. But it's always important that the model is the center of attention.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I get my inspiration from a lot of different things. But music is my most important inspiration source for everything. Besides inspiration it also gives me a lot of energy!

Think you in advance what you want in the picture? Sometimes. But most of the times I just pick up my camera and just try something. After that I try to improve it again and again until I'm happy with the results.

Studio, on location or both? I prefer on location. To combine the model with the location gives so much more feeling in my work. But I do enjoy to work in a studio once in a while.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional? I'm a hobbyist photographer. I work as a professional cameraman and video editor and having a different creative hobby gives a good balance in expressing myself.

What has been your most memorable session and why? I think the first moment I made a portrait picture. Just seeing the results and editting my picture om my laptop gave me a big satisfaction and made me curious to see what was possible.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens? I work with the Canon 6D for photography at the moment but I also work a lot with of Sony cameras. The quality of them are amazing! My favorite lens is the Tamron 24-70mm F2.8. It's the best all around lens for video and photography and works great in lowlight situations.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business? Find your true quality. There are a lot of people that can make good pictures but when you find something special in your pictures you will stand out.

What do you think of our new magazine?

I really like it! I'm happy that there is a platform where photographers and models are able to share their vision and portfolio.
