Interview: Photographer Ray Cabrera (Vietnam)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I’m Ray Cabrera from Iloilo, Philippines and I am currently based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

How and when did you get into photography?

Eversince, I enjoyed taking photos and I loved looking at the photos of my photographer friends. So, I decided to buy my first entry-level DSLR camera in 2014 and took photography courses to learn the basic and at the same time to meet people who share the same interest as me.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is my passion, my happiness. It takes me away from reality. It is photography that accompanies me when I am alone. It is art, a form of self expression. It is good way to tell stories and show beauty.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I love portraits, beauty, fashion, lifestyle and street photography. I love taking photos of poeple and show how beautiful people can be. I love to experiment and create images that are appealing, edgy and beautiful. I’m quite playful as well with my works and open to new ideas.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Mostly, I get inspiration from other photographers, famous or not, as long as I feel there is something about their works. At the same time, I like to think of ideas and create images in my head incorporating what I see, inspirations and my own style to it.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

What I want in a picture is the style, unique…something different from what I often see. I want a picture that creates difference, but still looking beautiful. Authenticity. There’s a little weirdness sometimes, but its beautiful when it’s different.

Studio, on location or both?

Both. And it depends on what kind of shoot.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

A paid professional. I was once a hobbyist. But I want people to take my works more seriously because photography for me is a form of art!

What has been your most memorable session and why?

When I got the opporuntiy to shoot for a cover of a magazine. That’s when I thought of myself as a seroious photographer and that I’m doing well as a photographer.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Nikon. I started with my 50mm/1.8fstop.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Be inspired all the time. It may take time but you have tob e patient. Be unique. Create an image that you think is beautiful and hone your craft!
