Interview: Photographer Kamil Olejnicki (London, UK)

Can you tell us a little about you? Hello, my name is Kamil Olejnicki. I born in Poland, but since 2013 I live in London. I'm 29 years old. I am happy daddy and husband. How and when did you get into photography? I have found myself loving photography for many years ago but I didn’t know that time it will be my best hobby and job. Around 2,5 years ago I bought my first professional camera and at first, I started to do landscape pictures but that was not what I liked so I tried to do portraits. My first model was my wife, to be honest she inspired me to develop my photography skills. I didn’t know how to advertise my work so I decided to create a Facebook and Instagram account. All I wanted was a place to share pictures with other people.

What does photography mean to you? Photography to me is catching a moment. It helps us to remember little things, long time after you have forgotten everything.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers. I focus on portraiture, I shoot marvelous fashion and moody portrait photography.

Where do you get inspiration from? I am inspired by the work of 3 photographers: Georgy Chernyadyev, Dani Diamond, Damian Piórko

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture? It depends what kind of story I want to tell. Usually I speak at first with my client and ask what kind of session she wants and then we decide on a location and outfit. I also like spontaneous work, especially here in the UK you never know what weather could expect so sometimes you can get pictures you didn’t even think about before session.

Studio, on location or both? I prefer outdoor shoot with natural light as I can choose so many different backgrounds which could perfectly match with my model and story which I want to show.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional? At the moment I am a part time photographer but, I hope in the future I could be a full time. A few months ago, I have started collaboration with one model agency based in London so I hope it help me to develop my skills and show my work to a wider audience. It is not easy to stand out in this profession if you're completely new, additionally the competition in London is huge. You have to find your way and style to be special.

What has been your most memorable session and why? I remember one session which I made in spring 2 years ago on a beautiful beach in Cornwall. I was very stressed because that time I didn’t know much how to compose pictures etc. However, I was lucky because my model was perfect, she had much more experience than me and pictures came out beautiful. Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens? One year ago I would say Nikon but a few months ago I swap my camera to Fujifilm crop sensor, sounds crazy but I really love it! The colors are amazing and this blurry … Favorites lens is 56mm 1.2 and right now is my only one lens which I use. In the nearest future I am planning to buy also 23mm 1.4.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business? Do what you do, never give up! Try to find your own, unique style. Everyday learn something new, you have to do this more often than others to mastered your own style.

What do you think of our new magazine? I really love it, that was great idea to create something like this. Thanks to you we can see a unique work of other photographers and models. I am waiting for a printed version in store. It was a great honor for me to have the opportunity and write something for you. Thanks!
