Interview: Model Hayley Wilson (Scotland)

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Hayley Wilson and I am 23 years old. I grew up in the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, with my parents and 2 siblings. Growing up I was a huge tomboy so I spent a lot of my childhood either outside, playing with friends, practicing sports or staying indoors and playing on my PlayStation. I was also a very artistic child, I loved drawing, painting and creating things which in the end has also become a huge part of my adulthood. In my teen years I was still very creative, however, I had become shy and lacked the confidence to further my ideas and dreams. In all honesty my teen years were confusing, I was told as soon as I hit the age of 14 that I should already know what I wanted to do with my life and I think the thought of that just made me incredibly anxious. However, I am now at peace with myself and I think taking some time to figure everything out has been really good for me.

If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?

If I could change something about myself, I think It would be to accept the past. I have a hard time of letting go of my mistakes which I guess is a bit of a bad habit. I’m working on it though.

How did you start modeling?

The idea had been planted in my head since I was very young, my mum was always told I should do child modelling etc, and once I grew up, I became more accustomed to the idea. When I was 16, I entered a modelling competition and got to the final round. Sadly, I didn’t win and after that I sort of gave up for a while and focused more on my studies. I worked really hard and I was accepted into a good university, however, during my first year my mental health began to decline rapidly. I enjoyed the subject I had chosen to study I mean sure; it was stressful at times... but I just couldn’t help feeling like I had only gone to university because it was expected of me.

Once I had dropped out of university and sorted out my mental health, I felt like I was slowly becoming myself again, the creative side of me began to blossom again. I started to consider modelling and decided that I was going to do it. I completely threw myself into it, it was terrifying as I had no idea how it was going to turn out. Thankfully it worked out, definitely one of the best decisions I've made in a long time.

What do you think of the work as a model?

I love it! It's definitely more challenging than I thought it was going to be, it's not so much a case of just standing there giving your best “blue steel” face to the camera. I think of it more like acting, it's important to channel the photographer's vision into your modelling, it's also important to take into consideration the outfit, makeup and hair, these are equally as important. Some days on set can be long, but it’s always fun when you have a good, likeminded and creative team around you, the day definitely flies by. It’s also nice being able to have an input into the project as well, whereas a lot of jobs you are sort of given a command in which you must follow. I enjoy having the freedom to be creative and have fun at the same time whilst working.

What is your beauty regimen?

After showering I cleanse my skin with Mario Badescu enzyme cleansing gel which removes any lingering dirt or oil. Next, I use a toner, this prevents any bacteria which may be lingering on my skin causing breakouts or rashes. After using my toner, I proceed to my vitamin C serum (which is very good at preventing ageing!) and finally my moisturiser, I use a moisturiser with SPF 50+, again, very good for Anti-aging as it deflects any light which may be damaging to your face and skin.

What are your personal qualities which distinguish you from others?

I think something that sets me apart from others is I have quite a bubbly personality, I find it easy to get on with other people I love working as a team and I am always up for a challenge. As I said before I'm very creative so my mind is constantly flowing with ideas and potential projects.

What are your plans for the future?

At the minute I'm looking to sign with an agency, possibly in another country and travel whilst working. I think one of my main goals right now is to have fun and enjoy myself, travel and work as a model whilst I'm young. I would love to do runway! As for later on, maybe I'll go back to university and complete my degree or I'll open up my own business.

What are some of your favorite experiences so far?

Some of my favourite experiences right now have been from when I've travelled, I love meeting new people and discovering other cultures. Depending on which country you are from there are things that you can experience in other countries that you would never be able to experience in your own and I think that’s amazing, it’s what makes it special and creates that special place in your heart. I also love trying all the different cuisines! I'm a big foodie so being able to experience other cultures food is one of the main reasons I love travelling so much.

Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling?

Practice makes perfect. Practice your facial expressions in the mirror, and also your body language, recording or taking pictures from a tripod (or even having a friend take pictures/video you) helps A LOT. Be confident in front of the camera, having confidence shows in your body language therefore creating a better picture. This one takes time though, if you can, model around your family and friends as this will allow you to shake off that shyness. Working with lots of different photographers and people will help you develop confidence. And lastly, drink water and lots of it. Water is your skins best friend, keeping yourself hydrated is extremely beneficial for your body.

What do you think of the magazine?

Modellenland magazine, is full of diversity, creativity and uniqueness which is why I love it. Modellenland produces some really stunning pieces of work, by extremely talented individuals, it's always great to see all the different varieties of work and looks put together by people.
