Interview: Photographer Danylo Mykhailenko (Ukraine)
Can you tell us a little about you? Hi! I’m Danylo, I’m 27. I was born in Donetsk, now live in Kyiv and work as a architect-designer and photographer. I like to travel, learn smth new and gym. Not married) How and when did you get into photography? I bought my first DSLR camera when I was at the university in 2012. When I picked it up at the post office, I pretended to be a connoisseur, but in fact I had no idea how to plug-in the lens to camera. At home I took the instructions in my hands and after a week I studied the camera and shot only in the “manual” and only in the RAW. At first I thought $500 that I spent were my only expenses. How wrong was I, but, of course, I have no any regrets) What does photography mean to you? Photography is a hobby. It is love. It is a part of life. I’m addicted to everything connected with it. I do not have a specialized education in photography, from the start, and to this day I learn it by myself and enjoy it. Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers. I shoot portraits, boudoir, nude, erotic, fashion. I take pictures of what I like and what I consider beautiful. Mostly I shoot girls. Where do you get inspiration from? Pinterest is one of the best inspiration for me. I also like to browse 500px, the pages of other photographers (here I want to note the awesome Oleg Zotovs’ photo school) and models on Instagram. Also new or old movies can inspire. A little thing in the picture may come up with a completely different idea. Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ? Sure. I prepare in advance and draw in my head future image, poses, other details and entire process. But during the shooting you should be prepared for everything and get the maximum (absolute) result from each shooting. Everything could go to hell, even with the best preparation. And in cases like this truly professionalism is manifested. Studio, on location or both? I like taking photos everywhere. Studio has equipment and a specific interiors, but there is a time limit. Sometimes I take pictures even at home in the room (at first glance it does not at all look like a place for a photo). Jokingly, I call it a “studio of garbage and sticks”. When people look at the result, sometimes they cannot believe that these shots were taken at home. By the way, some of the photos presented here were also taken at my room. Unlike a studio where everything is already ready, such shootings allow you to more fully show your art, fantasy and creativity. Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional? «The best job is a high-paid hobby» - Henry Ford. I’m a photohobbyist who gets paid for his passion. Freelance photography allows me to more conveniently plan my time and give each client enough attention so that everyone is happy with the result. What has been your most memorable session and why? I remember all of them. And all the stories happened with them. It is hard to mark out one thing, because I love eachsession in my own way. But still, I will mark out one interesting shoot. It was a photosession with a girl and a horse. I remember that the day was extremely hot and we were in the field – so you can imagine what was going there. It was a hard day and I arrived after two more shootings. In addition to the burning sun, the horse was constantly bitten by gadflies and he could not stand for a minute calmly. It’s generally difficult to frame with animals – your and animal wishes could not match at all (/laughs/). In addition, the model had a large magnificent dress in the style of the 19th century. But we did it. Now I would re-shoot that session with better equipment and more experience. Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens? What about Sony?) For 6 years I was on Canon and for 2 years on Nikon (still now and dont want to change). Both of these companies are good in their own way and each has its pros and cons. Unfortunately, both companies entered the mirrorless race quite late, but right now Canon is a little ahead of Nikon (for what I am a little annoyed). As for the lenses, now my favorite is Sigma 85 1.4 Art. It is very large and heavy (thats why I do not sell my Nikon 85 1.8), but I like its crazy sharpness and nice picture. What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business? I advise you to be persistent. You need to learn a lot, practice a lot and understand styles and art to become a well-paid photographer. The market is crowded with photographers and to stand out among them you need to work exctremely hard. And even beyond. Shoot a lot of TFP to get a good experience. That’s how you’ll succeed.
