Interview: Model Gaia Pulitelli (Italy)
Can you tell us a little about you?
I am a 21 years old girl from Rome, Italy.
As well as being a model, I am a full-time university student. Indeed, I am currently attending the third year of my degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the Sapienza University of Rome. Against all expectations, I have always had a rather introvert personality, but photography has played a key role in pushing me out of my comfort zone. It introduced me to a new extraordinary world, allowing me to meet incredible people and live enriching experiences.
Sport is another fundamental part of my life. As a child, I practised artistic gymnastics at a highly competitive level and later I engaged in several other sport disciplines. Particularly, my last passion became rope climbing, and I am sure I will not leave it any time soon.
If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?
As I mentioned before, I have always been quite a shy and insecure girl.
Photography has helped me to acquire greater self-awareness, both physically and psychologically. I can now say that I would not change anything about myself because I learnt to love me just as I am.
How did you start modelling?
I have dreamt about modelling since I was a little child. I remember playing with my friends and imagine being on a set, posing like the fashion models that I saw in the magazines.
Turned 18, I met a professional photographer with whom I made my very first shootings. Subsequently, I published my shots on social networks, where several other photographers noticed me, and thence my career started.
What do you think of the work as a model?
During my experience, I discovered that modelling is a complex job which requires seriousness, commitment, but above all, it needs humility. Without these characteristics, you will not go very far. Moreover, I believe that posing represents a highly empowering form of expression. The model works in synergy with the photographer to shape an image, whose ultimate purpose is to convey an emotion. Like any form of art, it allows you to explore yourself and share an idea, a feeling with the public, and I think this is what fascinates me most about this world.
What is your beauty regimen?
I firmly believe that external beauty is a direct result of what is inside us. Accordingly, our mental and physical well-being is crucial. I am personally very attentive to my diet. Indeed, I try to eat in the healthiest and most balanced way possible. As I previously said, I also practice a lot of sport, constantly training my body. In this sense, I give a special thank to my parents who have always educated me on a healthy lifestyle.
In terms of my beauty routine, for many years I have only used natural and organic cosmetic products. Fortunately, my studies have allowed me to better distinguish the products that contain potentially harmful ingredients, therefore I try to avoid them as much as possible.
What are your personal qualities which distinguish you from others?
I am a very sensible person. While in the past I thought this represented my greatest weakness, now I am aware that it stands amongst my major strengths. Thanks to my sensibility I can understand a lot more of the people and the world surrounding me. Moreover, I am a highly determined person: if I want to achieve something, nobody can stop me.
What are your plans for the future?
Firstly, I will do my best to successfully conclude my university degree as soon as possible. As for my career in modelling, I have huge aspirations for the years to come, but being superstitious, I prefer not to reveal them yet. I prefer to wait for them to come true, hopefully soon!
What are some of your favourite experiences so far?
Interesting question. It is hard for me to choose a specific favourite experience. However, I always keep every positive aspect of my life path with me, trying to improve myself and grow continually. What I love to remember are my first days working as a model, in particular how I felt the first time on a set: I was quite agitated but above all enthusiastically excited.
Do you have any advice for those who want to start modelling?
Going back in time I would tell myself to believe more in my skills and potentials. I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to enter this fascinating world.
Certainly, it is crucial to start doing a lot of apprenticeships. Indeed, you cannot hope to start your career immediately with a bang, thus you are required to have relevant working experiences, just like any job in the market.
In practical terms, it is useful to start collaborating with expert photographers who can teach you extensively about posing, while allowing you to increase your visibility through their knowledge. I advise that you rely on serious people and always check a photographer's portfolio first to assess their credibility. Furthermore, communication is essential in this job. Before photo-shooting, you always have to plan your work with the photographer, so that you never feel unprepared.
What do you think of the magazine?
I love what you created. You ESTABLISHED an innovative platform which allows connecting with other models and photographers. I am glad I participated in this interview.
