Interview: Photographer Mario Boccuni (Genoa, Italy)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I am a freelancer videomaker and photographer, many of my clients are artists who need videographic or photographic services to be able to promote themselves.

How and when did you get into photography?

I started as a videomaker about 10 years ago, then I discovered that I was also passionate about portrait photography, so now I work both as a videomaker and as a photographer.

What does photography mean to you?

For me every shootings is a beautiful experience shared with other people, where everyone has a specific role, and the more synergy is created, the better the result.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I really like to create dynamism in my photographic shots. I believe because in this way more real, precious and interesting moments are created.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I do a lot of iconographic research on the net, usually on Pinterest. To learn more about a technique or a photographic effect, I usually follow tutorials on YouTube.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ?

Each shootings works if it is well thought out and planned, but if the planning is good you can also afford a little improvisation.

Studio, on location or both?

Both

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Videomaking and photography are my passion, it is what i want to do in life.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Maybe the photo with the smoke in the her hair, the model is called Matilde Pedemonte, me and the assistant, Pietro Fornasari, had used Low Cost accessories, but the result was very satisfactory.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I started with Canon, now i also use Sony and GoPro a lot. The lens i use most often is a 50 mm Pentax 1.7, grafted with appropriate adapter rings.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

In photography, videomaking and any other activity everyone usually start from the contacts they already have. You can accept some collaborations at the beginning, but then you should start setting a price. Show the pictures you are most satisfied with on social media. When you have enough good photos, also make a paper portfolio.

What do you think of our new magazine?

I find it is a very beautiful thing, especially in this period of crisis, that there is a magazine that is committed to promoting those who work in the field of photography.
