Interview: Photographer: Eleonora Fridman (Israel)

Can you tell us a little about you?

My name is Eleonora (Ella). I was born and raised in Ukraine. At the age of 17 I immigrated to Israel. I studied in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and I have a Ph.D in Molecular Biology. I work in one of the research departments at the Hebrew University.I grew up with a father who worked as a photographer and who influenced me the most.  He pushed me to hold a camera as a child. Later, as a grown woman, my father gave me a new camera and I started to enjoy the art of photography, striving to develop myself and continuously learning.

How and when did you get into photography?

Like many armature photographers I started just by documenting my daily life/trips, children, the city I live in, etc.’

What does photography mean to you?

For me photography is a way to develop my vision. By thinking of new subjects to photograph and create I find myself in an imaginary world of color and beauty. I  find this fulfilling and interesting as part of my life.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

My present photographic style is Fine Art. The combination of the female body and beauty with good lighting, emotion, composition and a bit of retro clothing. All these elements help me create the look I see in my imagination.

I find my inspiration in the works of other painters and photographers. To name a few of the them:  Amedeo Modigliani, Caravaggio, Paul Gauguin, Paolo Roversi, Sarah Moon.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

Usually  I have vague ideas in my head and then I see an interesting character and the wires connect and the images start to take shape and content.

Studio, on location or both?

I love to work in studio like spaces with natural light mostly. But from time to time I use flash in the studio.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I am absolutely consider myself as a hobbyist. I do my photography from love and creativity.I don’t want to be in a status that my love becomes work.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I was in a boudoir shoot with a model. I was busy helping the model to dress up. And we were both tying a corset to her body. When we started to shoot it was apparent that the corset is upside down. It was very funny.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I am using Canon gear. My most used lens is the Sigma Art 85mmF/1.4

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

I don’t know how to be a business women. But I think the one should consider working as a photographer only if in the location where he lives there is a specific demand for photography services.

What do you think of our new magazine?

I think the magazine is very beautiful. I really love the graphic design and the high quality photography. I wish the magazine will succeed and grow with a thriving community of photographers.
