Interview: Photographer Lukasz Tylek (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you?

Hi, my name is Lukas, I'm 38 years old. Photography is my passion and I spend my free time doing photo sessions. I usually work in my small sushi bar.

How and when did you get into photography? I started making pictures not too long ago. Before my trip to Thailand, something about 4 years ago, I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to take photos. I had no idea how to take pictures, rules of compositions, etc. However, after my holiday, my friends praised my photos. A few months after the holiday I bought my first camera - Sony RX100m5. At first, I was learning how to photograph landscapes. I had to teach the rules of compositions, etc. This time I used my small camera during weekend trips and holidays. First women portraits I took 3 years ago. My friends and colleagues were my models in those days. I was trying to develop my photography and retouching skills. My small Sony camera was not enough, so I decided to buy a Sony A7III with lens 55 m 1,8. I was participating in various courses all the time and I am still learning. It is how I started my adventure with women and portrait photography.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is my huge passion, a great way to spend free time and personal development. It is not just looking for great light, nice shots but also new relationships. I have a lot of satisfaction when I can show new photos. It gives me a new energy to organize photo sessions and try something new.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I do not have a specific style, I like to experiment with light or retouching techniques. The weather has a big influence on the style of my photos. When it's raining, I take black and white photos more often. It is hard to say why it happened. I feel better in this kind of photography.

Where do you get inspiration from? At the beginning I was looking for inspiration in social media. I tried to repeat shots that I liked. At the moment, I am following the achievements of the best photographers in Poland and in the world. I usually take photos spontaneously during the sessions. In my opinion it gives better results than copying the works of other photographers.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

I create the atmosphere of the photo session during retouching. Everything depends on the light and place. I rarely plan my shots in advance.

Studio, on location or both?

I prefer outdoor locations for my photo shoots. I like space, looking for good light and interesting places. Sometimes I work in a studio. I always care about a good atmosphere at photo sessions. Good relationship with the model makes the photos better.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Photography is my hobby, but I hope it will be my full time work in the future.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

My first sessions were the most stressful, because I didn't have any experience. I remember them the most and they taught me a lot.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

From the beginning I have been using only Sony and I will stay with this brand. My favourite lens is the Sony 135 1,8 GM. I love the photos taken with this equipment.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

I focus on personal development, work and practise. Only continuous improvement of skills gives development. I'm not afraid of criticism. Opinions of others can be of great help.

What do you think of our new magazine?

Great magazin where we can find a lot of excellent photos and inspirations.
