Interview: Photographer Ignac Tokarczyk (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I’m from Lublin, Poland. I have an M.A. in Polish Philology, but work as an IT specialist. For some people this is quite exotic, but I always say that the ability to read is very helpful in this job J About a year ago I took up climbing. It gives me a chance to relax and to tire myself out in a good way.

How and when did you get into photography?

Oh, you’re asking me about my childhood J I’ve taken my first pictures at a ZOO. After coming back home we developed those pictures with my dad in our bathroom.

What does photography mean to you?

I consider photography a language. A way to tell stories. I’m always trying to have something to say about the people I photograph. Each story is different. There are no two photographs that are the same.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I’m trying to be a minimalist. In my opinion simplicity is the key to a good portrait. I don’t need colorful makeup and big setups of flashlight. Many means of expression can hide the true picture. Create a distance between me and the model.

Where do you get inspiration from?

From other photographers. From my models. I watch a lot of pictures, paintings.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

I try. But often the final effect is very different J Much depends on the people I photograph.

Studio, on location or both?

Both. A studio is comfortable, but taking photos on a location is more interesting.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I’m trying to be a paid hobbyist J I want to have a little fun and satisfaction. Not to treat photography as a full time job.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I have many sessions in my memory. I liked the one with Kate walking upon a river. Inka sitting on the edge of an old building. There are many memories that are not very spectacular, but I like and remember them very well—it’s Monica’s look, tears of Angelica, and many, many more.

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

If you are asking for a name, it would probably be Peter Lindbergh. His way of looking at people is very close to mine.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I worked on Minolta and Canon, but in the end my choice was Nikon. These cameras are the most comfortable for me. Favorite lens? Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 and Nikkor 105/2 DC.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Learn and watch. Find your own style.
