Interview: Photographer Titus Poplawski (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I am a man that is lucky enough to be able to dedicate my time to photography. Photography is not my source of livlihood which allows me to fulfill myself without external restrains. I like so many things connected with art that it was hard for me to fully dedicate myself to only one area of interest. Eventually photography turned out to be the closest to my ideal.

How and when did you get into photopgraphy?

My first photos I took alongside my father when I was around 10. At the same time I started developing the pictures by myself in the dark room. Looking back I can say that the introduction of digital photography made me lose my initial passion for photography and that was probably due to a low quality of it. Now I can appreciate more the progress that has been made in this kind of photography.

What does photography mean to you?

Undoubtedely giving myself great pleasure. Photography is a kind of art that is supposed to give people involved in it (the creators as well as the consumers) pleasure.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I wish the Japanese Wabi-sabi could describe my photography. Pursuing perfection but finding beauty in imperfection, elusiveness. Submitting to the moment, trusting a chance. I have the time so I patiently wait for my style to reach its full form.

Where do you get inspiration from?

All is a matter of chance. There is no need to attach an ideology to it. Undoubtedly I like people and perhaps I like to show their emotions?

Do you think in advance about what you want in the picture?

In doing studio photography I know what I expect and how I want to achieve it. However I love chance ideas. I am deligheted when I come upon unexpected gems.

Studio, on location or both?

I love outdoor photography but since I have built my own little studio for convenience sake a lot of my photos are made in that venue.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid profesional?

Like I said at the beginning I am certainly a hobbyist but I try my best to do it as professionally as I can. Post-production is very important to me.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

This year I entered a photography competition. And it was exactly that session with Lisia that appears to be the most memorable. We won the first place in nude category of the Fine Art Photography Awards. And that was the only competition I have ever taken part in.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Sony plus 50mm F1.4 ZA FE Planar and Fujian 50 and 30 mm F1.4 and 1.7. I love their imperfection. Analog camera Hasselblad 503CW.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own busines?

Look for good assignments! But more seriously at the same time seize the day and do the kind of photography you love.

What do you think of our new magazine?

I look at it as a photographer. It’s a place that brings interesting people together, models, photographers, fashion designers, hairstylists, and makeup artists. It’s always going to be a special place! Good job! Keep up the good work!
