Interview: Photographer Kim Jonsson (Sweden)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I’m a Sweden based photographer living in Malmö. I focus on portrait photography and fashion editorials.

How and when did you get into photography?

I was using my iPhone to take photos in early 2018. Mostly nature and landscape photography at that time. I checked YouTube videos to improve my editing skills, and finally decided to buy a better camera in august in order to start doing more serious photo work.

What does photography mean to you?

Half of photography is people work. Most of the preparation is connecting with the correct people such as model, makeup artist, fasthion stylist etcetera. During the shoots I’m in constant discussion with all the people in the shoot. The other half is a blend och practical and creative work that combines into art.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I have yet to discover my own style, but my aim is to make fashion editorials. I’d love to some day get on the cover of Vogue magazine. Until then I’ll keep improving.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Just scouring the web, Instagram and Pinterest for fashion editorial work goes a long way.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

I always prepare for my shoots. I want the model, location, outfit and makeup to be planned out beforehand. I don’t want to simply shoot a model, I want to capture an idea.

Studio, on location or both?

Both. However I prefer to shoot outside in daylight.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Semi-professional at this stage in my development.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Probably my first portrait session with a model. There was a lot of pressure for me to perform well and produce good photos, but in the end the result turned out great and I learned a lot.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I’m using a Sony A7ii with a SIGMA 85mm 1.4f lens. But my preferred setup would be Sony A7iii with a SIGMA 50mm 1.4f lens.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Do a lot of photography. Think less about the money and more about making connections and doing the work. Focus on building a portfolio and meeting other skilled photographers, models and stylists. And try to get somewhat of an idea of what kind of photo work you actually want to do.

What do you think of our new magazine?

Great outlet for amateur and professional photographers. The layout is awesome with full page prints. Very nice indeed.
