Interview: Photographer Karolina Ałdaś (Poland)
Can you tell us a little about you?
My name is Karolina Ałdaś and I am from Zielona Góra in Poland. It is a middle size city in the west of the country. Perhaps there is not many attraction but it has got it’s charm. Funny fact is that it is much closer to Berlin than to for example Warsaw.
How and when did you get into photography?
I have been professionally working as a photographer since around 2006. At the beginning of my journey I was shooting various types photos of a various style and subject. I did not have a clear concept yet of where to focus with my development. The breaking moment for me was when I finally realized what I am passionate about the most in photography – sensual sessions, engagement sessions, fashion and portraits. I love my job for the opportunity to capture a moment in a picture. Time, appearance, look, love, emotions! Our history is those elements of our life that we want to go back to. Thanks to the photos we have such an option. This is why I put whole my heart in every shot. This job gives me strength and energy. Maybe such a commitment is not entirely healthy but it allows me to live a beautiful moment… a moment caught in my and your pictures.
What does photography mean to you?
To answer to this question I think I will use a quote which is very important to me. “To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place…. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” – Elliott Erwitt. These moving words perfectly describe what I feel about photography.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
There is no dominant, special style in my work. I always want to show a character I take pictures of the best I can. To peek behind the curtain of her/his personality, to unveil the mystery that everyone hides. I spend a lot of time with photoshop – I work on a picture as long as I am pleased with the effects.
Where do you get inspiration from?
I am still developing and looking for my path. That is why I am searching for inspiration in pictures taken by other photographers. I always do it in my own way though. I put a part of my own invention.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
There is no surprise here, of course Canon! My favourite lens is 85mm.
Think you in advance what you want in the picture?
It happens quite often that I look at the model and make a plan in my head or build a scenery that we could use. Of course I don’t have everything planned from the beginning until the end. The best pictures are made spontaneously!
Studio, on location or both?
I like on location the most because I like to work with a natural light. Although I managed to achieve a few interesting results in a studio as well. I am very pleased with a couple of them.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
Photography is currently my job, I have been doing it for a living for a year now. I hope it is enough to survive. Until now it is.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
My most memorable session was about Marilyn Monroe. That is when I managed to do the majority of my frames really good. I felt real satisfaction. I hope I will have a chance to share those with you one day.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
Take as many pictures as you can. Don’t be afraid and you will succeed.
