Interview: Photographer Manuela Masciadri (Italy)

15 Sep 2019

Can you tell us a little about you?

Hi and thanks for this opportunity.

To introduce myself, I’d like to share what people say about me:

“Manuela writes, makes exhibitions, she goes beyond the concept of fashion photography” (La Joker ).

“In her study years, she experimented the way of photographic art, specializing at an international level and promoting a new approach that combines images with literature, making her an important protagonist of modern cultural life“. (Attestato di Benemerenza “Cerchio Aperto” ).

“One of the most eclectic photographers of the italian fashion scene”.  (White Show Milano ).

How and when did you get into photography?

I’ve always been obsessed with biographies: faces and lives of artists are really interesting to me. I spend a lot of time studying them in deep, trying to understand them. I also learned how to put my vision into photos and words.

Today I’m working in this way with different kind of brand (fashion, commercial etc ): nowadays to tell the story behind the product is the most important things.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is one of my ways to give shape of my visions, feeling and studies (as well as writing, filming and painting ).

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I feel represented by these visions of my work:

“Her humanistic nature, gives to her images an intimate and emotional flavor, telling soul and personality of the subjects portrayed, although wrapping them in fashion allure“. (Fresh Management ).

“Manuela enriches his photographs with texts that have literary taste, binding together love for art, literature and passion for beauty. Her emotional portraits are interpreted through a refined vision of fashion”.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Books, movies, paint, sculpture, music, lives of artists, trips. As well as a deep feeling, an interesting chat, two intense eyes and a sensual body movement.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ?

Absolutely. A well done moodboard is really important to make your team understand your vision.

After that, and after a proper set-experience, you can just feel the set and improvise.

Studio, on location or both?

I’m always seeking for the most interesting natural light. You can find it in most unexpected places.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I’m a professional since more than 10 years.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I’m lucky enough to say that I have a lot of stories to tell.

From the shooting in the middle of the Carrara’s marbles (where Michelangelo chose his favorites ones for his masterpieces ) to a fashion editorial behind the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC.

From the beautiful Venaria Reale in Turin (the residences of the Royal House of Savoy ) to the magical carousel behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

I can’t wait to shoot my next project.

You can see more on my blog and on my instagram page

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I usually work with Canon since many years. 70-200 2.8 and 16-35 2.8 are essentials to me.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

As I say to all my students: put your truly self in your pictures and you will be unique.

Learn the technical side of photography really well and then do what you like.

What do you think of our new magazine?

I like the professional attitude of the team and the beautiful work you do.

Thank you very much for having me and for sharing my work.  -
