Interview: Photographer Karolina Piórek (Poland)

Can you tell us a little about you? Hi, I'm Karolina and at the beginning of this year I quit my full time job to create my small world. I'm full of fear but really happy at the same time. So yes, you can call me a crazy one ;) How and when did you get into photography? I discovered Photoshop in high school and my first picture was taken with a cellphone. I started by taking self portraits and creating modifications of them. At this point there was nobody to whom I could share my ideas. I remember when I created my first account on "digart" website (it doesn't exist anymore) and suddenly the entire world opened to me. What does photography mean to you? Photography allows me to create a world that I miss so much since entering adulthood. When you are kid, everyting is perfect for you, you notice all shades of grass and stuff like that. Photography gives me joy, peace and allows me to keep balance. I treat photography as a gate through which I can express myself fully. Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I didn't want to be label and definitely limit myself but if you look closely at my portfolio you will notice that this is a portrait photography with a hint of surrealism.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ?

Yes, I do. Usually. But I let myself being spontaneous sometimes and I'm not planning everything at all. I'm trying to use all available resources and I think that gives me a little bit of creativity for the future.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Definitely from movies, music and everyday life surrounding me.

Studio, on location or both?

Definitely on location.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I treated photography as a hobby my whole life, but now it's my lifestyle. I can't imagine doing anything else right now.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I think it's still ahead of me. However, one of the most magical moments happened recently. At the end of the photoshoot I was so happy and moved by the effects of our work that I needed to calm down asap because I was afraid that the model would think of me as a crazy person ;) I really appreciate those moments. I feel that everything is in the right place, that I am in the right place and what I do makes sense.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Canon, but it doesn't matter, I think. Sigma 35mm 1.4 ART.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Don't care what others think. Just do your thing. If you love it - do it. Don't waste time on something that you don't enjoy. It may be hard at the beginning but keep going.

What do you think of our new magazine?

You create a place where everyone will find something for themselfs. A place full of inspiration and creative people. That gives us a chance to look at the photography with eyes of other individuals like never before.

Thank you for the opportunity to show my work on Modellenland.
