Interview: Photographer Dmitry Baev (Ukraine)
Can you tell us a little about you?
Hm, I’m portrait photographer, I live in Odesa, Ukraine and I love people.
How and when did you get into photography?
In 2013 I was looking for a hobby and remembered that photography was always interesting to me. Since then, photography has pulled me in.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography is a tool for me. With the help of which I try to express my feelings and share my idea of the beautiful.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
Definitely Portrait! Painterly portrait. I would like to be able to draw, but the universe gave me a camera instead of a brush. By the way, I found the brushes later, in Photoshop J
Where do you get inspiration from?
Of course music and paintings, I can’t work without music and painting for me is always an example of form, color and composition.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ?
Yes, I always try to plan, but the result primarily depends on the relationship with the person I'm photographing.
Studio, on location or both?
I love working with light. So there are more opportunities for me in the studio. But on locations I also like to take pictures from time to time.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I prefer to be a paid professional. But I would have continued to take photographs knowing that I would not receive a cent for it. For me, money is more of a by-product of what I love to do.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
It was young girl Lena. On that day, I decided to shoot against the rules. And accidentally found my understanding of light in portrait photography.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
Doesn't matter at all. Old lenses with a focal length of at least 85 mm.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
Do not start if you are not sure if it is yours or just want to make money. But if you have already started, then do not regret the time for photography. And remember that your photos are a reflection of what is in your head.
