Interview: Photographer Miriam Ognibene (Italy)
Can you tell us a little about you?
Sure, I'm Sicilian but I live in Milan where I work as a photographer. I am a dreamer and I
love creativity in all forms that can help me express myself. I love to travel, laugh and meet
new people.
How and when did you get into photography?
I discovered photography as a child, because my uncle photographed me and I loved the
click of the shot and then I was intrigued to look at my photos and find out what I was like.
At the age of 12 I started portraying my friends. At the age of 20 I started making my first
photographic projects by the author, photography made me happy, so I decided to turn
that passion into work.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography is my dimension, it is a tool, like a pen or brushes, but it is what I prefer
because it gives me the opportunity to tell what I observe in an immediate way, even if
meditated. Whether it's instinct or reasoned, the act of photographing is for me like
revealing a secret and being able to breathe air to exist.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
My style is spontaneous, I love naturalness and elegance. I like to experiment and use
various techniques, play with various types of lights, with different shutter speeds. Each
project requires "to be dressed appropriately" and for this reason I feel the need to vary.
Where do you get inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from my interiority, from my reflections sometimes from my night
dreams. Generally I observe the reality that surrounds me and let myself be inspired, then I
try to tell it in my own way.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?
It depends on the type of photography, if it is about fashion yes, I organize everything in a
precise way, it is the project itself that inspires me, the materials, the fabrics, the story I
want to tell. When I do reportage, however, I like to follow my instinct and immerse myself
in the world with transport.
Studio, on location or both?
I really like working in the studio to have control of the lights and every detail but with
pleasure I move to various locations, exteriors, interiors, natural places ...
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I am a professional and photography is my work as well as one of my favorite worlds.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
There were some very engaging projects in which a beautiful harmony was created with
the whole team and accompanied by the music that was the soundtrack to the day I really
felt in balance with the world and when this happens, despite the physical fatigue, I feel
energetic and incredibly inspired and positive.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
Canon, it was my first choice then I never changed, I like long focal lengths, the 70 mm is
one of my favorite lenses.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their
own business?
It is a complex world because it is full of competitors, my advice is to always believe in it
and not be afraid to propose, to always try to remain humble and to remember that there
is always something to learn.
What do you think of our new magazine?
I think it is a nice magazine, well edited, the protagonists are chosen with care and it is very
pleasant to leaf through, it is nice that the photographs are anticipated by the words of the
author / protagonist because it is more interesting to know something about who took
them or of those who have posed, because it is better to enter that small world. I am
happy to be part of it and the role of the models is fundamental to my work so I am always
grateful to the models to work with me. I like knowing them and knowing what is behind
them. The human aspect is always very important to me.
