Interview: Photographer Stefano Massini (Italy)

Can you tell us a little about you?

Hi, I’m Stefano. I’m a photographer born and raised in Rome and the photographic genre which I prefer is the portrait, especially feminine, glamorous and Boudoir.

How and when did you get into photography?

Photography came into my life by chance and it all started almost as a joke, but it was enough to understand that I had discovered something fundamental in my life.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography for me is a way to tell through my eyes what surprises me, what I like and what evokes emotions to me so that I can share it with the world.

Please briefly describe your photography for our reads?

In my style I always try to prefer elegance, emotion, fantasy.I love to create images that make viewers feel as if they are entering into a dream.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I find inspiration continuously from books, films, magazines, photographs of other photographers but also from other disciplines, illustrations. I love the erotic comics of the 80's and 90's by Milo Manara and LancioStory magazine.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

Yes, of course, everything is thought in advance. Nothing is more effective than having a theme photographic around which build your own photo shoot. The choice of model, location, clothes, makeup, poses, nothing is left to chance.

Studio, on location or both?

I shoot outdoors and indoors, in studio and on location, it depends a lot on the project that I wants to do. I really like the management of natural light but I love to work even with flashes. For the genre Boudoir and Glamour I prefer apartments with vintage furniture.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyst or paid professional?

I am not a hobbyist nor a professional but a person who does exactly what he likes and for this reason I am very lucky. I have had commissioned jobs, for which I have been paid, other times I have paid to access workshops or for personal projects that I have used to experiment.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

A shooting in Prague, a beautiful city that has remained in my heart, under the river Moldava, we organized a set with an illuminated ballet dancer by flash lights and with Charles Bridge as background.

Nikon, Canon or something else? Favorite lens?

I have used almost exclusively Canon Reflex cameras for years but in 2020 I switched to mirrorless technology Sony. I use only fixed lenses, I have my 85mm 1.4 GM Sony always mounted to my camera, sometimes for space issues I use 55mm zeiss and I have not a great feeling with the zooms, I prefer to use my legs to get away or get closer to the scene I'm shooting.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Study a lot, shoot only the things you are interested in, use your head first and just after the camera, then you have to be tenacious and never feel satisfied but be humble and think that you will always have to learn.

What do you think of our new magazine?

It’s the magazine for those who love photography that describes current trends and styles, I really like interviews with photographers and models. This magazine gives emerging photographers great opportunity to make themselves known. There are beautiful photo shoots with models and models to view.
