Interview: Photographer Evgenia Stupakova (Russia)

Can you tell us a little bit about you?

Hello readers, fashion lovers and photography enthusiast. I’m Evgenia Stupakova and I’m a fashion photographer based in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I actually started out in front of the camera, modelling already at the age of fifteen. In the past five years I have successfully transitioned to working behind the lens and have learned to appreciate the art of taking the shot. Having worked on both sides has given me a skill set and knowledge base that I can rely on during photo shoots and helps my deal with the brief and close relationships between photographer, model and client. In my opinion a symbiosis is the key to a great picture, the team work and talents of all involved persons at the photo shoot has captivated me and motivates me to pursue this field of work as a profession.

How and when did you get into photography?

Back in 2014 I felt the need for some changes in my life, I wanted a career direction that I could pursue long term and therefore I decided to follow my dream of becoming a professional fashion photographer. I moved to Saint Petersburg and successfully completed photography courses at the Photo-College, which were held by well known and reputable Russian photographers. While I was doing this and for the first period afterwards, in order for me to make a name for myself, I started out shooting models for free, which was essential to gather experience and valuable feedback.

What does photography mean to you?

Becoming a professional photographer has been a dream professional of mine since being a child. Photography itself gives me a forum to be creative and express the way I see fashion and art. I believe that photography will positively challenge my entire life and will motivate me to keep developing my skill-set. I hope to provoke feelings through my pictures and create something unique which resonates to people’s emotions.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I challenge the models to give me their best. I always keep in mind that each model is unique and beauty is a matter of perception. Models at any age have a certain elegance and vibe. I am only satisfied when my pictures capture the personality of the model and their natural beauty is evident.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I get my inspiration from watching backstage videos of famous photographers during fashion shoots, as well as by following my favourite models in fashion campaigns and editorials.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

I initially have a meeting with the client to get a sense of what is required and demanded. Open and honest communication is key for a successful photo shoot. I think about what results the client and I would like to achieve and I create a mood-board with styles, colours, poses and atmospheres according to the images I have envisioned. I then discuss this with my team, as they are essential for realization and can give valuable inputs and ideas.

Studio, location, or both?

That really depends on what photo shoot I am doing. I prefer to shoot fashion editorials on location and portraits in a studio.

Would you consider yourself a hobby or professional photographer?

I’m a professional fashion photographer working in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Of course, for the future I’m striving to expand my reach and visibility, i would like to combine my passion for photography and fashion with my love of traveling. My dream would be to be booked as a professional fashion photographer for reputable global magazine brands and famous designers worldwide.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Not too long ago I was shooting for a fashion magazine in several locations. Our last location for the photo shoot was directly near a busy street in front of a barbed wire fence, with a very urban vibe. While the photo shoot was in session, two car drivers were unfortunately distracted by the beautiful model and had an accident directly behind us. Luckily no one was hurt, it could have ended differently.

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

I have always found inspiration by visiting photography, art and fashion exhibitions. Seeing how the best of the best capture shapes, colours, lights and emotions in their works, drives and motivates me to find my own voice, vision and expression in photography.

Nikon or Canon? Favourite lens?

My favourite camera manufacturer is Canon, which is also the main camera I use. My favourite lenses are Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II and 100mm f2.8L (macro).

What one piece of advice would you give a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Photography is art... gain as much experience as possible by learning from peers and leading photographers, be open-minded for critique and grow from mistakes, ask questions and be patient... successful will follow.
