Interview: Make-up artist Julia Vasilkovskaya (Ukraine)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I’m fashion make-up artist and model from Kiev, Ukraine. Work with a lot of photographers, for magazines and designers all over the world. Have lovely daughter, husband and 2 British cats)

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start?

I had started to work as a MUA in 2015. It was an impulse decision after my trip to LA. I always wanted to make art and make up was very close to me because of model work. I started from make-up school and tried to do every kind of make-up job to choose my own way) And finally chose fashion.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get a lot of inspiration from everything that I see outside, because all of it can be useful on fashion shooting. I read a lot of fashion magazines, it helps to build a taste and just enjoy works of colleagues. Also, I get inspiration from cosmetics, its colors and textures, even packaging) I like to buy a lot of new cosmetics for my work, read a lot about it and always try something new. Other ways to find inspiration are models, art galleries, cinema.

What are some of your makeup products that you use?

For skin I like Make Up For Ever brand, especially Ultra HD foundation and HD powder, it’s great for shootings. Highlighters and primers - Becca, I like its shining. Brow and lip palettes - Anastasia Beverly Hills. And of course Marc Jacobs shadow palettes, its my new love.

Any makeup tips you'd like to share with us?

Use your favorite cream blush also on lips and eyes, it helps to create fresh and trendy look very fast.

Who have you worked for and who would you like to work for in the future?

I have worked for Vogue Italia, Elle Man, Faust Magazine and more than 30 different magazines all over the world. I have worked for one of the best Ukrainian designers Irina Dzhus, for french designer Anggy Haif, with talented fashion photographer from Paris Jude P., we even had an exhibition with our photos in Paris; with famous spanish cosmetics brand Julia and now we have a lot of advertising everywhere in Spain with my make-up, with a lot of supermodels. I like to work with different photographers in Ukraine, they are very creative.

My professional dreams are connected with photographers, models and magazines) Of course, I wish to work with Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Kate Moss, Daria Werbowy, for Vogue, Elle and other magazines in different countries.

If you were not a makeup artist, what would be your dream job?

Model or photographer) I like this sphere.

What are three things every girl needs in her makeup bag?

Concealer, cream blush and lash mascara.

What are common mistakes you see women make on their makeup?

Do make-up from Instagram even if it doesn't combine with their appearance and outfits.

What do you think of the magazine?

It’s very interesting fashion magazine! It gives me a huge amount of inspiration!
