Interview: Photographer Gaston Lamaitre (Netherlands)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I am a Dutch photographer located at the center of the country. I work as a studio photographer focusing on fashion photography and advertising.

How and when did you get into photography?

I discovered Photography when I was young. At school I learned how to work in the darkroom, developing film and printing the analog way. I rediscovered photography in the Digital age and specialized on commercial photography.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is a way to express my creativity and at the same time work with a group op people on a result.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

I photograph fashion and commercial models in a serious and strong manner in color on a minimalistic background.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Sources of inspiration for me are: Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Annie Leibovitz, Albert Watson and Erwin Olaf.

Do you think in advance what you want in the picture ?

I always have an image in mind with the composition, mood and light as my starting point. From there I start exploring the possibilities.

Studio, on location or both?

I work in studio (80%) and on location (20%)

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I work as a paid professional for commercial clients and editorial projects. I photograph Architecture and Landscapes as a hobby.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

I photographed some celebrities but the most memorable session was having a Ballerina jumping in a museum with a crowd around her while I took pictures.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

I Neither use Nikon or Canon. I use Pentax and Sony cameras. My most used lens is the Pentax D FA 24-70mm F2.8 but by favorite is the old 50mm F1.4, 8-lens elements Takumar.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Doing photography as a business is a lot more than just taking great images. A large part of your time goes into actually running your business. If you only like to take images, think again if you really want to start a business. If you do, go for it! Photograph as often as you can.
